Don't Worry Baby

Photogaphy, Hahnemuhle paper

While originating from a Guatemala, Worry Dolls are sold to the West as an instrument that can take away a child's worries. The artist was gifted a collection of worry dolls as a child, however kept them even as they deteriorated over time.

Now, they are a physical structure that have become an object of transformation in order to move from what can be an overbearing and seemingly inescapable manifestation of trepidation. Our concerns may vary from environmental issues to mental health issues, but at times we must face our anxiety and make a choice in how to respond.

Reflecting on the human body as a symbol for both a personal and universal relationship with our surroundings, this project aims to confront our concerns, whether they are personal or universal.

Each worry doll has been enlarged to an unrecognisable size, emphasising the contorted postures and warped fabrics, holding the physical manifestation of our concerns. The worry doll becomes a place of transition from ourselves to another. In the case of humanity, it is perhaps vital that we enter a space between our past, in order to contemplate our futures.
