DisorientMonash Abroad Residency, 2009

Performance documentation, Bisenzio River, Prato.
Felt rope made of local Italian wool.

In the Italian town of Prato the river is of high significance, a strong textile industry having evolved in the region. This section of the Bisenzio River bed was dry in the peak of summer. The industrial history and the location of the performance, combined as a backdrop to my physical and emotional discoveries of a new place.

‘Unable to see, my toes grasp the felted rocks as I stagger across the riverbed. The unravelling of my own felted wool that clings around my waist becomes a lifeline. Although it is fragile,  my body continues to pull onwards and unwind. The history of the landscape is new and fresh, a continual discovery beneath my feet. I become the weaver and the woven, a symbol drawn through the space. Yet it is a disorienting relationship, the chaotic events of what is foreign and uncertain, the trust that comes with learning to accept situations without fully understanding them and the letting go of the bonds that hold us together.’
